Strategy for Sustainable Palm Oil

Palm oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in the world and plays a central role in various industries. However, the production of palm oil can be associated with significant ecological and social challenges, making it crucial to promote sustainable sourcing to protect the environment and guide the entire industry into a responsible direction.

As palm oil is one of our main raw materials, we see it as our duty to support sustainable palm oil production. Our strategy for sustainable palm oil is based on three core aspects: collaboration, physical transformation and inclusion of smallholders.

Collaboration with Organizations

Since many years we collaborate with various organisations such as the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and FONAP (Forum for Sustainable Palm Oil) to jointly engage with partners along the supply chain for the sustainable sourcing of palm oil. It is important to actively participate in the transformation.

Use of Sustainable Raw Materials

On the procurement side, we commit to sourcing palm oil and its derivatives that are produced without converting high-protection areas, high-carbon land or destroying peatlands. This is done in accordance with international human rights and labour standards, including the principle of free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) from the affected communities, and in close coordination with our suppliers. Additionally, many of our products are already available as RSPO certified variants. Some product lines have even transitioned entirely to using sustainably certified fatty acids several years ago.

Inclusion of Smallholders

Another important aspect is the inclusion of smallholders in the palm oil sector. As part of a FONAP project, we support small farmers in Indonesia to facilitate their access to best practices and certification opportunities. This is achieved through initiatives in social forestry and regenerative agriculture, which also encompass the protection of water resources and habitats.

Continuous Improvement and Transparency

To promptly address any complaints regarding the palm oil supply chain, we have established a clear grievance process. We are committed to handling all incoming complaints with the necessary diligence and transparency. However, to date, we have not received any direct complaints.

Overall, our strategy for sustainable palm oil encompasses a variety of measures that consider both, ecological and social aspects. Through continuous improvements and close collaboration with various stakeholders, we aim to fulfil our responsibilities now and in the future, making a significant contribution to a sustainable palm oil supply chain.
