GREVEN INSIGHTS CONSTRUCTION: Restoration Plaster

Restoration plasters are specialized building materials that play a crucial role in the repair and preservation of historical and damaged buildings. By proper application and the formation of large, spherical pores within the plaster, salts can crystallize inside the restoration plaster without damaging the surface. This prevents efflorescence and allows moisture to escape from the walls as water vapor. They are indispensable for the sustainable renovation and long-term preservation of buildings, as they not only restore the aesthetic appearance but also ensure the structural integrity.

Hydrophobization is essential for the effectiveness of restoration plasters because further water penetration into the building fabric must be prevented. At the same time, breathability must not be compromised. Water vapor must still be able to escape while liquid water is repelled. This requirement places high demands on the hydrophobization agents used. They have to achieve sufficient hydrophobization without significantly affecting the air void content or vapor permeability.

We have addressed the specific requirements for restoration plasters and developed a product that is excellently suitable for this application: LIGAPHOB CA 6 PLUS. It is an inert metal soap with a unique chemical composition. The product strikes a balance between dispersibility, hydrophobicity, and workability in the plaster.

LIGAPHOB CA 6 PLUS has been tested in various restoration plasters to gather valid data on product performance. The results show that it can be used in different dosages to achieve either light or strong hydrophobization without any issues.

Regardless of the amount added, both the capillary structure and the air void content remain nearly unchanged. Additionally, neither the open time nor the workability or setting behaviour of the plaster is affected.
